OFFICE HOURS (all levels)

Tuesday Class Descriptions

Office Hours is like a mini-private lesson. You show up and put your name on the list and Peter splits the hour between everybody there, giving one-on-one advice and help while the rest of the folks hang out, practice, dance, or whatever they like. If you wanna just come use the space for your own practice - you are welcome to join us for free!

SOLO JAZZ

Solo Jazz Basics (all levels) is where we work on the classic simple steps from back in the swing era. These steps teach you how to move to jazz music from the inside out and they are what you can throw into your Lindy Hop basics to spice things up.

Solo Jazz Routine (Level 3 & 4) is our advanced jazz class where we'll put some simple and some trickier steps together to create a short routine to the music. It's a challenge!

SOLO CHARLESTON

Solo Charleston is an energetic dance with lots of kicks. Lindy Hop came out of Charleston and Charleston is now part of what makes the Lindy Hop. Come learn some awesome solo steps to this amazing dance!

SOLO WARM-UP TO FUN MUSIC (all levels)

Solo Warm-Up to Fun Music is like Zumba except it's not Zumba. Peter plays a bunch of his favorite jams and keeps you moving and sweating for an hour. He'll break down some things, but generally it's just a sweaty good time. If you've ever joined us for one of our patented warm-ups on Wednesday nights then you know how much fun this is!

WORKOUTS (6-count, 8-count, Swingout)

SOUL LINE DANCES (all levels)

6-count Workout (Levels 1, 2) is where we refine the connection and lead & follow in the basic 6-count steps and if we have time, we'll even throw in a couple new ones.

STUDENTS MUST HAVE COMPLETED THE LEVEL 1 (6-count) SESSION

8-count Workout (Levels 1, 2) is where we refine the connection and lead & follow in the basic 8-count steps and if we have time, we'll even throw in a couple new ones.

STUDENTS MUST HAVE COMPLETED THE LEVEL 1 (8-count) SESSION

Swingout Workout (Levels 1, 2) is where we refine the connection and lead & follow in the swingout itself, the most important step in Lindy Hop.

STUDENTS MUST HAVE COMPLETED THE LEVEL 1 (8-count) SESSION

Soul Line Dances are just little solo choreographies, like the electric slide, and we usually learn about 4 or 5 in a night. We do them to R&B or Hip-Hop music and there are a ton of them out there. We'll be teaching some we've made, some classics, and some new popular ones. It's the perfect chance to stop spectating and start participating!

20'S CHARLESTON & BREAKAWAY

20's Charleston refers to the pre-cursor to Lindy Hop, an upright dance to fast music with lots of kicking and rhythm and lots of different variations. The "Breakaway" as it is known was the link between Charleston and what became the swingout and eventually Lindy Hop. Come learn some great moves for faster music!

(HOW TO LEAD AND FOLLOW) COOL MOVES
COMPETITION CLASS
COMPETITION CLASS

(How to Lead & Follow) Cool Moves will pump up your Lindy Hop vocabulary and give you a bunch more in your repetoire as a leader and as a follower to keep your dancing fresh and interesting. We'll have some fancy moves, some classic, and some just plain different, but they all help to make you a better dancer for your partner!

  • Explore ways to make your dancing more dynamic

  • Discover how to stand out to impress the judges and the crowd

  • Participate in a mini-contest in every class!

Each of these stand-alone lessons will each be 1hr and 30 min to give you a little extra time (for the regular price!) to get into the material so take the challenge and try it out!

SHIM SHAM

The Shim Sham is a classic jazz and tap line dance created by Leonard Reed back in 1930. It has been adopted by Lindy Hoppers around the world and popularized and often led at Lindy Hop events by the great Frankie Manning. It is relatively simple and it has many classic jazz steps involved so be ready next time a Shim Sham breaks out at the dance and come learn the dance!

AMAZING AMALGAMATIONS

Amazing Amalgamations is a class where Mikey & Dee will teach you some fun moves and string them together to create fluid and interesting combinations. It's all about cool moves and smooth transitions!

FANCY FOOTWORK

Fancy Footwork is exactly what it sounds like. Add some fun variations to your dancing. We'll will show you ways to incorporate footwork variations into your 8-count and 6-count lindy hop.

JAZZ UP YOUR LINDY HOP

Jazz Up Your Lindy Hop will teach you how to incorporate your vintage jazz movements into the footwork of your lindy hop. Add Suzy Qs to a Swingout; do the Shorty George through a pass by; become more creative with your dancing and add that extra flair.

THE BIG APPLE

The Big Apple is a classic jazz dance and the version we will be learning was created by the great Frankie Manning for the movie "Keep Punching". It's a tricky one and that's why Mikey & Dee will be spending 4 weeks on it so you can REALLY get it and master all the steps.

TRICKERATION

Trickeration is a classic solo jazz routine created by Norma Miller for her troupe, the Norma Miller Dancers. It's got a bunch of great steps and you should learn it!.

BALBOA

Balboa is a beautiful and subtle member of the swing dance family. This dance is done in close embrace, often to relatively fast music. It's all about the feeling between the partners and maintaining an easy float while throwing in some fancy footwork and partnering.

Up-hold vs down-hold: Balboa generally has 2 takes on the same basic step, one where your foot holds for a beat up off the ground and one where your foot holds for a beat down on the ground. They both work for different things and dancers should learn to incorporate both basics into their Balboa. Because this dance has so much subtlety to its steps and weight changes, we often focus on one or the other basic at a time to really get the feel of it and then of course the goal eventually is being able to effortlessly flow between these two basic steps and all the variations that flow from them.
