Hey all,

Haven’t posted to the blog for a bit because I have been ridiculously busy, first working on dance stuff like the Strutters’ Ball and Dance Day and then busy not sleeping and playing xbox 360 and generally feeling sorry for myself while I recovered. Well, I’m feeling largely alive and rested today so I just wanted to write a little note about some of the stuff we’ve done and are going to do with Uptown Swing.

Good times rollin at the Dance Day @ Segue Cafe

First off, thanks to everyone who came out to the Dance Day event at the Segue Cafe. I had a really hard time finding somewhere new after the Tea Garden let me know that we couldn’t run it there this month and special thanks are in order for Kiley who connected me up with Jane at Segue Cafe and who, along with Michael, worked like a dog all night so we could dance til midnight. I love the Dance Day events and each one has had such a nice feeling, I hope to find a way to keep making those happen, and to keep ‘em free so you can bring your non-dancing friends to come check em out and try out a free lesson.

The Uptown Swing logo branding the floor at the Uptown Strutters' Ball

Next up, huge thanks to everyone who came to the workshops with Naomi in October and especially those who made it out to the Uptown Strutters’ Ball. I was really excited for the event and for me it turned out better than I could have hoped. Thanks to everyone who volunteered to help out, it was much appreciated. I never want any of you to feel obligated to help set things up or pick up or anything, but I really do appreciate all the offers for help that I get, I think it speaks volumes about the kind of folks we have in our little swing dance scene that we all probably alternately love and get sick of all the time. It makes me appreciate it. I hope to do another Strutters’ Ball sometime in the next couple of months, hopefully even bigger and better than the first and I’ll let you know the deal when I get it set up.

The band swingin at the Uptown Strutters' Ball

I should take a moment to recognize Naomi who not only put up with me being super busy and ignoring her leading up to the Strutters’ Ball but who also taught some great classes and on top of that sang her heart out for us all night (and DJ’ed the band breaks!). I’m lucky to have such a talented ladyfriend on call to fill in so many roles to make a good event.

Behind the scenes as always Terry Joyce was with me for 2 separate 6 hour days of figuring out the sexy beautiful lighting in the ballroom and his commitment to making the place as beautiful as my demanding and inconvenient vision, and to making the sound right and generally making sure things work out well in the end is one of the main reasons the event worked out at all. Thanks Terry.

Here's Terry & Eileen basking in the glow of the lighting we spent forever creating.

Good shot of the room at the Stutters' Ball before the band got started

My dad who some of you may have met at the event (he and my mom came to check it out) was responsible for the beautiful frame above the stage housing that illuminated picture of Frankie presiding over the dance. Just when I was sure that I would have to give up on my favorite idea for the event, in comes Pops with a solution (which he installed on his birthday) Thanks dad!

Frankie presiding over the ball

Last but not least, I want to send a special thanks to Robert Bell for helping to put together a great band, and also for being such a great advocate of the dancers in general. I’ve dealt with a lot of musicians, and very few care as much as Robert about the people he plays for, and virtually none who I’ve met that are at his level. We talked for more than an hour about my vision for the band and he listened to me rant and worked his tail off to not only get some great players, but to make the dance great, like he always does. So thank you, Robert, for all your effort (and congrats again on getting married!) and know that we’ll be talking soon about future plans.

We’ll be taking the month off of lessons in December as I’ll be out of town running Swing & Soul (you should come to it and party with us!) and out of the country teaching at the Snowball in Sweden. That doesn’t mean though that Tuesday nights are dead. We’ll have the space rented out and I plan on setting up some organized practice times for any who are interested. As always, I’ll keep you all posted as best I can, but for now, thanks for everything. I’ll see you out of the floor soon.

Thanks to all who came out for the workshops on Sunday with Naomi and I. I was really happy with the lessons and it was good to see so many people come out and work on their dancing. I commend the guys on their extensive use of their pelvises for my class and really the girls looked beautiful with Naomi’s amazing routine. (I told you she was the bomb at that stuff didn’t I?)

The dance was another great success in my eyes, so many good dancers coming out, Naomi’s amazing DJing, some candles and nice lighting, and a general all-around good feeling in the room. Just know for the record you guys that if I run a dance I plan to make it as sexy and beautiful in there as possible, and I think each time gets better – and I have plans too…

It was a really long day for Naomi and I, but it makes it all totally worth it when everyone is so helpful and cool. Thanks to everyone who helped out at the door while I was running around, setting up and getting Thai food, and thanks a ton also to the crew who stayed til the end and helped put everything away super quickly.

The feeling at the dance on Sunday is what I want for the Minneapolis scene and it is why I created Uptown Swing in the first place and why Naomi and I are putting on these workshops and dances when we can. I really think it is something special when people in a scene can share not just the social dancing they do, but also the work of improving and the bonds you create from that sharing. That is what I remember most about when I was starting up, was how we all shared learning the dance, not just doing the dance, and it is so awesome to see people do the learning and then see the results in their dancing echo out into the overall vibe of the scene.

I like what we’ve got going here so lets keep rolling with it. I’m gonna keep trying to get new people started with Uptown Swing beginner lessons (new session starts August 31st!) and keep pushing people’s dancing with the intermediate lessons. If you guys have ideas for things that could happen in the scene lemme know. I don’t have a lot of time in town so I can’t do a ton, but I like what I’m doing now and want to see more happen here. In any case, I’ll see you all out dancing soon, but for now, thanks!

Dear Swing Dancers,

Just wanted to send out a thank you to everyone who showed up to Uptown Swing’s Dance Day at the Tea Garden event this Saturday – it was an amazing time at both the afternoon and night sessions. Robert Bell & the Twin Cities Hot Club lit the place up during the day and we seriously worked it out to some soul jams all night. Here’s some evidence:

The lessons went great, we even got some new folks to give it a try and that was possible in large part due to the willingness of all of you who showed upto help out in the lessons, and to meet and dance with someone new to the scene. I am humbled by how willing everyone was to help and make things run smooth and easy – I can’t tell you how many times people asked if they could do something for us. I think we are getting a good momentum going here in the Twin Cities and if it keeps going like this, our little scene is gonna really become something special soon enough. I want to particularly thank Stacia for doing a ton of coordinating while I was gone in Herrang and Chas who helped out a ton (as always) on the day of the event to make things just right. And thanks to Becca and John for hauling ass all over town to get me the sound system, it made a big difference. And of course I have to thank Derek and the Tea Garden staff and management. Having an event was his idea and I really appreciate the open mind he had to all of our ideas, we got to do everything we wanted and it paid off beautifully. We broke the all-time drink sales record for the Tea Garden folks, and from what I heard, you guys weren’t cheap tippers either, which is a good showing by our peoples. So once again thanks for coming, for spreading the word, and for bringing the energy and attitude that made the event such a blast. If you enjoyed it, let the folks and the TG know. Here’s hoping we can do more with them in the future. For now I’m gonna sign out and get my first non-plane-seat sleep since Friday morning in Sweden. It’s hard to tell with all the excitement, but I think I’m totally exhausted. Hopefully I’ll see a lot of you guys on Tuesday when we start our new session at Uptown Swing and if not, maybe I’ll see you the next time we make some magic happen up around ol’ TG way.

Well it feels like I’ve been here a month already, but apparently it has been less than a whole week. I arrived in the middle of the day having missed my first two lessons, but just in time to catch the third. After the SAME PLANE as the day before had the SAME MALFUNCTION at 9pm, we were finally transferred to a new plane and took off at 1am – a full 30 hours late. Oy.

But it was worth it as I’ll explain later. Most importantly, I got here and as usual it is totally amazing. I’ve seen a giant chicken dance with Frida during the meetings every night while she makes announcements. I’ve had a random comment I made about dancing earlier and earlier in the night when I got old spawn an entire parade and “future” party over which I was forced to preside as myself 40 years into the future where I couldn’t really go to a dance past 8pm – with a live band and dancers from this same “future.” I had my advanced class interrupted by a circus-themed jazz routine in honor of tonight’s theme party. Plus I have had some amazing dancing and I am ready (after my 9m-midnight nap) to go get some more. Oh and I danced with Dawn Hampton. She really is the shit. If you ever get a free week in July, do yourself a favor and get out to Herrang, it truly is the Mecca of Lindy Hop and although it is quite likely that you will experience nothing on my little list above aside from great dancing, you will surely have some very special experiences of your own that I couldn’t even guess at. As they say here, “only in Herrang.”

I hope all’s going well back home in Minneapolis. Although it is hard to imagine the rest of the world existing while in Herrang, having my classes at Uptown Swing gives me a bit of an anchor to back home that convinces me that indeed home does exist when I’m not there so I’m writing to remind you all that I exist too, even when I’m not home. I’ll see you all actually very soon, although it won’t feel like that for me. In the meantime, be sure to check out Late Night Swing’s inaugural Thursday night at their new location at the Social Dance Studio – it should be great and packed to the gills with fun dancers. If you took lessons with Uptown Swing this session, be sure to let them know at the door as Late Night Swing will be our Uptown Swing field trip this session and Cindy & Terry are gonna give this session’s students $1 off.

With any luck at all I’ll be arriving back home just in time for the big National Dance Day event at the Tea Garden. This is why I said my plane debacle was all worth it. After a billion calls to Delta, they finally decided that to compensate for my flight pains, I could get my return flight changed to get me home at 12:30pm aka one whole 1/2 hour before everything starts up at the TG. I was scheduled to arrive at 3:30pm, so rushed as I may currently be, it’s much better. I hope to see everyone out on the 31st to come party with us at some time during the day – it should be super fun. Sign up here if you know you are coming to the (FREE) night dance so you can get a coupon for 1/2 off of a drink. For now, take care, I’ll try to pour out a little fun for the homies that ain’t here. Ciao!

Ok. After unexpectedly spending the night in NYC (luckily at my girlfriends place – although she is waiting for me in Herrang) I’m on the plane again. With any luck we’ll fly out tonight with no troubles (knock on wood). If all goes well I will hit land having hopefully only missed 1 or 2 classes and I will hit the ground running and teach a full day right away. Just like my forced stay in Paris a while back, things could have been much worse than to have a lovely lunch and relaxing afternoon in the East Village. And from all this kerfuffle I will hopefully be rewarded with a flight change (free of charge) on the way HOME that allows me to arrive earlier on the 31st just in time for the big Dance Day at the TG to kick off. Instead of landing at 330pm, I’ll land at 12:30pm, a whopping one half hour before the event begins. No rest for the wicked y’all. Next time you think how fun it would be to travel and dance for a living, remember that it doesn’t always go a smoothly as it is planned. But I remain in good spirits, excited for the trip and I’ll try to keep in touch and give you some updates from Herrang to hopefully convey the impossible to describe nature of the biggest best Lindy Hop camp in the world. Cheers!

-P

P.S. Even when you are totally getting screwed on a flight, be nice, it helps everything.

Well folks I’m excited to be off to Herrang Dance Camp again this year (you should really check out the info on that place and stalk the event on Facebook – it truly is the Mecca of Lindy Hop). I’m leaving tomorrow and I’ll be back on July 31st, just in time for Dance Day @ the TG. I think I’ve got just about everything in place before I leave: Registration and online pay are up and running for the August session, the website has a beautiful new look, thanks in large part to Shawn Lavelle, my benevolent web wizard (Thanks Shawn!), and I’m in the processing of getting some Uptown Swing T-Shirts made with that beautiful marquis logo some time hopefully during the August session. Lots of big things going.

For now I just want to thank everyone who has been helping to spread the word about Uptown Swing. So far you have been the biggest part of all in making my vision a success. I am really excited to get more people introduced to Lindy Hop & Swing dancing so please keep telling your friends. We have some great opportunities coming up to put the dance in front of people’s eyes and show them what they are missing out on, but in the end there is no better advertising than word of mouth, so thank you! Have a great time working on that solo movement with Stacia – I’ll be back in 2 weeks to party it up with you guys at the Tea Garen.

Well the first ever Uptown Swing Field Trip went really well. It was great to see everyone out and about and to get to dance with some folks and just mingle it up a little bit at Famous Dave’s last Monday. This coming Monday, (the 4th Monday of the month), the TC Hot Club will be playing at Famous Dave’s – again with no cover – and this is one of my 2 favorite bands to dance to in the Twin Cities so you should really think about checking it out. I’ll be out of town, but I’m sure there will be some folks there that you know (now). Thanks to Shannon & Bill for showing us all “The Madison” and making that swing night happen every Monday in Uptown. You can also find Bill & Shannon at Lee’s Liquor Lounge every Wednesday night for some live music (with no cover!) so check em out.

We’ll have this upcoming Tuesday off – no Uptown Swing, but then we are back on the first Tuesday in July, starting off our special July session. Read more about it and sign up HERE.

Hey all, here are some things going on that you should know about:

Uptown Swing Special July Session

July will be a special month for Uptown Swing. I’ll be teaching in Sweden for the second half of July at Herrang Dance Camp (www.herrang.com) so there will be no Lindy Hop lessons in July. Lindy Hop lessons will resume in August. But fear not! Instead, July will have two themes; the first 2 weeks will be dedicated to Charleston and the 2nd two weeks will be dedicated to Solo Jazz dances. Find out more HERE.

Uptown Swing Field Trip June 21st

Well kind of a field trip. We are basically all just gonna head out to Famous Dave’s in Calhoun Square in Uptown at about 8pm this coming Monday JUNE 21. There will be a bunch of Uptown Swing folks there that you already know as well as a bunch of other swing dancers that you can meet so come on out – there’s NO COVER – so really there’s no excuse to miss it!

Recap Videos

As always you can keep up with any classes you may have missed and see what we’ve worked on with our YouTube recap videos of the current Beginner & Beginner PLUS lessons posted HERE and HERE respectively on this site and also on my YouTube user page: http://www.youtube.com/user/UptownSwingLessons

That’s all for now. Check out the links and as always, spread the word! Hopefully I’ll see you out dancing soon.

Cheers,

Well, of course, like most ways to describe art, it can mean a lot of stuff, but when it comes to music to swing dance to, it has a kinda specific meaning. In this context, we are talking about a particular quality of the rhythm, regardless of what instruments are being played, or what era the music is from, or what genre of music it is.

Very simplistically it is sorta like a pulse, a bounce, or a lilt that keeps the rhythm moving forward, like there is a little bit of lag on some beats and some beats are a little quick. Of course these descriptions are pretty unhelpful and can be used to describe a lot of music that doesn’t really swing, and the more talking you do about it and the more technical you get, the further away you get from actually getting what makes any particular rhythm “swing” or not. So rather than annoy the music theorists out there who really know their stuff, we’ll just take a listen, with dancing in mind.

We’ll start out with the easy comparison of an old swing classic by the master of swing, Count Basie, and a hip-hop super-jam by Missy Elliott:

Easy Does It by Peetski

Lose Control (Feat. Ciara & Fat Man Scoop) by Peetski

Now I love both of these songs, but it’s pretty clear here that one works a little better for swing dancing than the other. But how to tell when the differences aren’t so obvious? Let’s listen to some songs that are more similar so that we can better hear the “swing” in the rhythm.

Here are 6 examples, 2 songs per artist, including one song with a beat that swings and one song with a beat that doesn’t swing (also known as a “straight” beat). Listen to these songs and imagine doing triple-steps to the beat (or really do em!) and you will be able to tell the difference pretty quickly because really, the difference is pretty easy to hear, especially if you try moving to it. If your triple-step sounds like a latin “cha-cha-cha”, straight and even, with equal time and emphasis on each step, then it doesn’t swing. If, on the other hand, your triple-steps have the feeling of “TRIP-le-step” with more time and emphasis on the “trip” that on the “-le-step” then you’ve got a swinging rhythm on your hands.

We’ll start with some soul music by Sam & Dave. First up, their version of an old Sam Cooke classic, “Soothe Me”:

Soothe Me by Peetski

Now take a listen to Sam & Dave’s signature tune, “Soul Man”:

Soul Man by Peetski

Both great songs, both great to dance to, but the first has that “swing” whereas the second has a “straight” beat. Next up, here are a couple songs by blues guitarist, Freddie King:

I’m Tore Down by Peetski

Goin’ Down by Peetski

Both about, going/being down. Both bad-ass songs in their own right to be sure. Again though, “I’m Tore Down” has that relaxed swinging feeling to the rhythm, even as he kicks the crap out of the guitar while on “Going Down” the beat is hard and straight.

Even in a genre like hip-hop, which is a little further down the road from old big band jazz/swing music than soul or blues, you can hear the difference when a beat swings and when it doesn’t. Here are two songs Outkast put together for a compilation of theirs:

The Whole World feat. Killer Mike by Peetski

So this time we have two hip hop songs, no big bands involved, and yet, “The Whole Word” swings, it’s beat just rolling and lilting forward while “Funkin’ Around” for all of it’s funk, doesn’t, strictly speaking, swing.

If it still isn’t super clear, I am gonna give you one more example, this one by a master of many genres, Ray Charles. It is perhaps no coincidence that this man who could play jazz, blues, gospel, soul, and Latin music, and who in many ways made Rock & Roll possible, has a song where you can clearly hear both a straight rhythm and a swing rhythm side by side. This is by no means the only example of this, but just try some triple-steps to this song and see if your dancing doesn’t change distinctly at about 1 min into the track. Check it:

You Are My Sunshine by Peetski

The track starts out as straight as can be with a bit of a Latin flavor, and then at about 1 minute the whole thing switches up and the whole beat shifts around and settles into this big heavy swing rhythm, only to return from whence it came 30 seconds later.

—

Now regardless of whether it swings or not, you can swing dance to whatever music you want, and don’t let anybody tell you any different. But, at the same time, don’t let anybody tell you that dancing to a rhythm that swings will end up the same as dancing to a rhythm that is straight, even if you are going for the same dance. If you are doing the Lindy Hop, it will likely work more easily with a song that swings. Old jazz music from the Swing era is really the architecture of swing dancing and Lindy Hop in particular, and the new rhythm that was blowing everyone’s minds back then was the swing rhythm. It had a force and a momentum to it that bled directly into the dance.

There are dances now that work great to music that has a straight beat, dances like Chicago Steppin’, Hand Dancing, or West Coast Swing (which can “swing” but doesn’t have to) and you can certainly take the partnering skills you learn from Lindy Hop and apply them to whatever rhythm you want. But while you are learning, take a moment to try out and enjoy the momentum and flight that the swing rhythm lends to your dancing. Because when we, as dancers talk about music that swings, and how great it is for Lindy Hop, or swing dancing in general, we are talking about how the rhythm moves us. How all the way down to our triple-steps, our movement is transformed by that quality of the music we call the “swing”.
